Band Practice

Anyone can come along to our practices, you just need to turn up. However if you’d prefer to get in contact with us first, just give us a call on 01724 379595 or send us an email to

Your first four weeks of practice are absolutely free – so there’s no reason to stop you from coming along and finding out for yourself if you want to learn this exciting new instrument. Normal practice fee is £5 per calendar month, which helps toward the cost of hiring the hall, band uniform and equipment.

You do not need anything special to start learning with us, although we do recommend a folder for storing music sheets and a bag for carrying your music and chanter or drumsticks. All equipment is provided by the band – this includes practice chanters, music sheets, bagpipes, drums, drumsticks, and uniform.

Practice takes place on a Monday night at the Polish Club in Scunthorpe, beginning at 6:30pm. Generally band practice takes place as follows:

6:30pm to 7:00pm – Beginner session – beginners will be taught individually or in small groups. These sessions are short as we find the concentration quickly dwindles, especially with younger members.

7:00pm to 7:30pm – Group session – learners and senior members will practice chanters and sticks around the table, running through the band’s repertoire.

8:00pm to 9:00pm – Full band session

Children can be accompanied by parents if preferred but it is often found they will concentrate and integrate better if they are dropped off and collected. Initially they only need to attend the beginner session, and further into their learning the group session, but when a set of pipes or drums are issued, the learner is expected to stay for full band practice. (This is negotiable for young/school age learners.) A learner is welcome to stay and watch the full band practice if they so wish.
